Service: Who Are You Serving?
“Every business, regardless of its offering, is in the business of helping people.” – Tom Gegax.
At the start of our careers, most of us dream of the impact we would make through our contributions in our diverse areas of specialisation and most often also desire to be recognised as people who have played a significant role in the advancement of our chosen paths. We have the whole picture played out in our minds over and over again but with only a few of us recognising that it is through serving other people that need our expertise that we can attain this level of impact.
When asked, many have let go their dream of achieving greatness and are only focused on doing their day-to-day tasks so as to fulfil the requirements for the exchange of value in the form of wages, salaries, payment for a service or product. The need to take care of the essential things of life has placed their dreams in the back seat.
You might think it is too late to recalibrate your steps – it isn’t! Your dreams are still very much achievable. Simply remember how you felt whenever you (think)thought of your moment of greatness and begin to retrace your steps. Evaluate yourself – ask your current self some pertinent questions.
- Are you currently in the right market space?
The clients you find yourself engaged with daily – are they really the people who dreamed about making their lives more comfortable? Are you making their lives easier by the service you are offering? Or do you find yourself in the wrong market space? Doing this would help you discover whether you are really satisfied with the business you are currently running or the career path you are on.
- If you find that you are in the right market space, are you giving your best to that space?
When last did you evaluate your processes and request for a feedback from your clients, staff or colleagues? Do you know if your skills are properly harnessed? Increase in knowledge and get better skilled. Continually look for ways to offer excellent service and great value to your clients.
- Are you passionate about the service you are offering?
The truth is our clients can tell when we are passionate about what we do and they are also tell when we are just enduring the tasks so that we can get paid. Leave an impression with the people you serve. Serve so well that they become your “number one” marketers. The more convincing you are, the more people want to be associated with you as a person and as a business.
According to Marian Wright Edelman, “Service is the rent we pay for being. It is the very purpose of life, and not something you do in your spare time.” It is therefore essential that each and everyone of us discover who we are to serve with an intention of benefitting the world at large with our superb services. When this discovery is made, we would find that we would come in contact the very people that need what we are offering.
